Goodbye June is Lightning 100’s local artist of the week! Goodbye June is a rock trio formed in 2009 by members Landon Milbourn, Brandon Qualkenbush, and Tyler Baker. The band formed following the death of Baker’s brother, which served as the inspiration for the band’s name and purpose. Since then, Goodbye June has released two studio albums, two EPs, and a multitude of singles. In their music, Goodbye June fuses the grittiness of classic rock with some elements of blues and gospel music.

The intensity of “Step Aside” builds up from the beginning, starting out with just a lone rhythm guitar. Lead guitar, bass, and drums enter after a short grace period, with vocals following shortly after. The verses sound subdued, with each player opting for simple grooves over complex ones. However, these grooves become intensified as the chorus approaches. On the other hand, Landon Milbourn’s vocal delivery is extremely gritty throughout, similar to the vocals of groups like AC/DC and Led Zeppelin. However, Milbourn makes this raspy vocal style his own through the lyrics and overall tone he uses. All of these elements are what makes “Step Aside” sound timeless in retrospect to the classic rock era.

Goodbye June released “Step Aside” in 2021, alongside an official music video directed by Tyler Dunning Evans. The song is one of five released to promote the band’s latest album, See Where the Night Goes. Pre-orders for the album, which releases February 18th, are available here. In addition, Goodbye June will be performing in Nashville February 20th to commemorate the release of See Where the Night Goes. Tickets for this celebratory event are available to purchase here.
