Casey’s DJ pick of the week is “Gold Confetti” by The Pink Spiders! This track dropped a couple of weeks ago as their first release in nearly five years, following their 2018 album Mutations.
Frontman Matthew Bell of The Pink Spiders (known as “Matt Friction”) formed the rock band in 2003 with bandmates JoCo (bass), Joey B-side (drums), and Jamie Sky (guitar). Influenced by artists like The Dead Boys, Buddy Holly, and Bay City Rollers, the band quickly took Nashville by storm performing their debut EP The Pink Spiders Are Taking Over. The Spiders generated so much buzz within only the first six months that they signed their first indie label deal. They have since earned praise from Billboard, USA Today, Rolling Stone, and even MTV; describing their album Teenage Graffiti as a “collection of sweaty, fist-pumping anthems”. As of early March 2023, the band is now signed with Pure Noise Records.
“Gold Confetti” is an electric pop-rock anthem, inspired by the ‘early morning aftermath’ of a New Year’s party. Featuring a distinctive rhythmic drum beat, dark and distorted electric guitar riffs, and Friction’s powerful, scathing vocals. With lyrics like “And in a minute you’ll be feeling the weight, Into the stretch of your veins, it’s like a loving embrace”, Friction describes the bittersweet emotions of the night.
