“Big Time” by Angel Olsen is Stephanie’s DJ Pick of the Week! Angel Olsen is an indie singer-songwriter and guitarist from St. Louis, Missouri. From an early age, Olsen aspired to be a performer in the music industry, finding interest in pop, punk rock, and alternative music. At sixteen, she joined a punk rock-inspired group called Good Fight, where she continued to develop musically. After graduating high school, Olsen moved to Chicago, where she would later build her solo career.
In a departure from Olsen’s earlier works, “Big Time” walks along the line between alternative and country music. The instrumental harnesses the vibes of a country ballad, featuring piano, steel guitar, and an acoustic rhythm guitar. The simplistic bass groove and linear chord progression add to the overarching country theme. Even the singing is as smooth as is typical of a country vocalist. On the other hand, the lyrics reflect a far more bold punk aesthetic, talking about love and loss all the same.
“Big Time” is the title track of Angel Olsen’s upcoming album. Big Time releases June 3rd on streaming services and vinyl: both pre-orders and pre-saves are available here. In addition, Olsen will be on tour this summer alongside Sharon Van Etten, Julien Baker, and Spencer. Information regarding this tour, which includes a performance at the Ryman, is available here.
