You might know Dan’s DJ Pick of the Week from its popular TikTok dance trend. “Space Girl” was released by Frances Forever at the beginning of quarantine as “a cute gay song to help people forget about the real world for a bit,” the 21 year-old artist explained on the platform that rocketed them to popularity. Influenced by the likes of Clairo and Mitski (from whom the name Frances Forever was inspired), the Clark University student started first gaining traction after entering NPR’s Tiny Desk Contest in 2019. Now, “Space Girl” has been streamed more than 21 million times on Spotify and hit number eight on trending songs on TikTok.

“Space Girl” is a dreamy ode to an intergalactic crush. Frances wrote the lyrics, which detail the relationship between the characters Space Girl and Earth Girl, after being inspired by an episode of Star Trek. The line “Space Girl, I saw a lunar eclipse / Looked like how I feel ‘bout your hips” is particularly popular, as it plays alongside thousands of TikTok users performing the dance trend that corresponds to the song. With roots in lo-fi and bedroom pop, the DIY energy behind Frances Forever’s music translates effortlessly to social media platforms such as this.
