Dan’s DJ pick of the week is “Solitaires” by Futurebirds.
Rollerblading is a lot like getting older. It makes your back hurt and you’re not always sure you’re doing it right. On “Solitaires,” Futurebirds say come what may, we’re gonna get through this together.
If you haven’t heard of Futurebirds, Easy Company is an invitation onto the cross-country rock n’ roll roadtrip of good friends, great times, and get-down groovy songs that begins when the album releases on August 9th, 2024.
Inspired by a graph correlating loneliness with age, Co-frontman C.W. King penned the song about how the instagram post made him feel. Initially bummed out, he then took the impending doom of isolation as a call to appreciate the relationships around him. “What is actually depressing about this whole thing, is that I am spending any of these fleeting moments that I have here looking at loneliness graphs on the internet.” – King. If there is a silver lining to the loneliness that comes with age, King has seen it and transformed it into a sonic salve to soothe the soul.
The track comes in support of Futurebirds’ upcoming LP Easy Company. Releasing on Dualtone, the album finds the Athens, Georgia group on the other side of their 15th year anniversary and rocketing even further afield in their mix of rock & roll, electrified folk, and cosmic American roots music. The album is a celebration of the ties that bind the group together, as well as a show of fresh force in change and evolution. Hoping to capture the raw energy of their live performances, the group worked with Brad Cook (Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats, Waxahatchee, Bon Iver) to get a bold and explosive sound on tape. With four tracks from each of the band’s three frontmen/songwriters, Easy Company is bound to be another electric step in dodging the pigeonhole for Futurebirds.
