King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard

“Magenta Mountain” by King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard is Dan’s DJ Pick of the Week! King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, also known as King Gizzard, are a rock band from Melbourne, Australia. Starting as an information jam band, the band quickly transformed into a formal performing group. The band’s famously long name stems from a last minute compromise between two names, “Gizzard Gizzard” and “King Lizard”. King Gizzard’s extensive discography includes twenty studio albums, three EPs, and a ridiculous forty-two singles.

In a departure from their earlier music, King Gizzard’s “Magenta Mountain” leans more towards psychedelic and progressive rock. The instrumentation consists of mostly electronic instruments, from the crispy sequenced drums to the wide array of keyboard synths. However, acoustic drums do make a surprise appearance towards the end of the song, with various electronic effects applied. Meanwhile, the vocals are soft and muttered, with a hefty amount of reverb applied. The harmonies are not subject to effects, but are more upfront and lively than the softer single vocals.

King Gizzard released “Magenta Mountain” to preview their newest album, Omnium Gatherum. The album is out now, on both streaming services and vinyl. In addition, the band will be on multiple tours throughout the spring and summer this year. Information regarding their touring schedule, including their upcoming U.S. tours, is available here.
