Casey’s DJ Pick of The Week is “Wild Geese” by Liv Greene!
Nashville native Liv Greene has gained buzz through her defiant yet vulnerable storytelling. She has been able to find a sweet spot in rootsy, traditional instrumentation and melodies, all shrouded in the vein of modern bluegrass and Americana one might seek from Sierra Ferrell and Molly Tuttle. Now that she’s established herself as a unique talent in Nashville, Greene is able to stretch her vision to new places. Her recent singles have shown her venturing into brand new territory. Deep Feeler is the title of her forthcoming record, and “Wild Geese” is the first offering.
Greene’s voice is earnest, sincere, and warm. In “Wild Geese,” she offers comfort to a lost soul. It is often easy for a song about hope and empowerment to come across as too vague or overly-romantic to be sincere, but Greene’s ability to deliver her lyrics in such a personal and familial manner pose this song as a real conversation from a close friend. Though inspired by a Mary Oliver poem, it’s Greene’s own spin on the themes that show her true lyrical brilliance. Similarly, she has been able to conjure strikingly vivid imagery and a unique warmth. On the song’s story, Greene wrote, “It’s about coming out of the dark end of winter, forgiving it, and letting it be.” Instrumentally, the song is beautifully soft, featuring some traditional staples of Americana and folk. A touch of accordion in the back half is a standout element, a testament to Greene’s arrangement.
Greene has been on tour with Mipso and Sarah Jarosz this summer, having recently signed to Free Dirt record label. You can catch her at the Eastside Bowl on November 22nd.
