Rev’s DJ pick of the week is “Nothing I Need” by Lord Huron!

Coming off of a release with actress Kristen Stewart in January, Lord Huron has returned with yet another single. Lord Huron has a thorough history beginning with founder Ben Schneider growing up in the Great Lakes, hence the inspiration for the band’s name from Lake Huron. After studying in both Michigan and France, he relocated to New York City and then Los Angeles soon after. At this point, Schneider recruited different members to play live shows which eventually translated into the Lord Huron we know today consisting of Mark Barry (Drums), Miguel Briseño (Bass), Tom Renaud (Guitar), and Ben Schneider. Since the release of their last full length album Long Lost, Lord Huron composed the score for the film The Starling Girl. This makes “Nothing I Need” their first non-collaborative, commercial song in 3 years.

“Nothing I Need” begins on a hopeful note with uplifting guitars, banjos, and brushed drums. Lord Huron holds none of their western influences back, soon crafting some pedal steel into the mix. The band continues through the song into a high energy chorus with mighty strums and thunderous cracks from the rhythm and percussion section. Their musicianship in this piece creates a beautiful montage of heartfelt nostalgia. Schneider’s vocals are also key to the vintage western vibe of the song. The relationship between the wide instrumental mix and the narrow vocal arrangement provides a unique balance between a modern and classic folk-rock sound. If you didn’t have the perfect song to drive through the mountains on a bright spring day, well, now you do!
