This week, Melissa has chosen “Addison’s Treehouse” by Kinslee Melhorn as her DJ Pick! Regarding the song’s inspiration, Melhorn recalls spending a lot of her childhood in her best friend’s treehouse. The treehouse serves as a safe haven for imagination, where Melhorn and her friends can be whoever they want to be. Melhorn further comments, “One day, I was just kinda down on adulthood and I thought about that treehouse”. Melhorn describes the simplicity of childhood, where anyone can pretend to be whoever they want to be. This memory sparked the idea for “Addison’s Treehouse”, and inspiration continued to flow from there.

“The song as a whole is kinda about all my childhood friends and how I hope they’re doing well” Melhorn adds. As the song progresses, so does the story that Melhorn tells. The second verse describes high school, where things are less simple than that original childhood description. Finally, the lyrics move even further into the future, noting, “It’s been five years now since I saw your face” and “Don’t you ever wish that we could just go back when all this growing up gets you down?”.

“Addison’s Treehouse” is Kinslee Melhorn’s first song in 2022, and you can listen to it right here:
