Steph’s DJ Pick of the Week is “Broken Man,” the newest track from St. Vincent.
St. Vincent is the passion project of Annie Clark. Since St. Vincent’s start in 2007, Clark has solidified herself as a powerful voice in the rock industry. “Broken Man” is the personification of rage in its purest form.
“Broken Man” is the first release from upcoming album All Born Screaming. This LP is the self-produced, seventh full-length album from St. Vincent. With multiple GRAMMY awards and the completion of an electric global tour throughout 2021 and 2022, St. Vincent is back and better than ever.
The bassline is infectious, dirty, and gritty in the best ways possible. The track features Dave Grohl on drums- an absolutely insane collaboration that adds to the beauty of this song. All Born Screaming is littered with friends and talented musicians. The album features the work of Rachel Eckroth, Josh Freeze, Dave Grohl, Mark Guiliana, Cate Le Bon, Justin Meldal-Johnsen, Stella Mogzawa, and David Ralicke work to create a highly eclectic but powerful album sonically.
This track is powerful, aggressive, and an absolute show-stopping welcome into the album. It’s a bend on gender stereotypes and a complete turn from Clark’s past work. On the album, Clark notes, “There are some places, emotionally, that you can only get to by taking the long walk into the woods alone- to find out what your heart is really saying.” If “Broken Man” is any indication of how cathartic that ‘walk in the woods’ was, All Born Screaming is going to be a highly dynamic and sonically powerful album. Set as Clark’s first self-produced album, her creative vision is prominent throughout the entire project.
