Stephanie’s pick this week is “New York Transit Queen” by Corinne Bailey Rae. Bailey Rae came to play with this single, so hold on to your hats.

When you think of Corinne Bailey Rae, soulful melodies, feel-good lyrics and laid-back instrumentals come to mind. “New York Transit Queen” will blow all your expectations out of the water. An electric, high powered track, this tune is rebellious and unapologetic. With audacious vocal chants and punk-rock electric guitar, “New York Transit Queen” is a certified headbanger. The first single of her upcoming album Black Rainbows, the track is a tribute to the first of the African American Miss New York Transits, Audrey Smaltz. Bailey Rae gave some insight into the inspiration of the alum on her instagram, writing “This is an album that is extremely special to me, as it is inspired by the objects and artworks collected by [Theaster Gates] at the Stony Island Arts Bank in Chicago.”

Bailey Rae has been in the music scene for years, and was the fourth female British act to have her first album debut at number 1. After her enormously successful single “Put Your Records On” from her self titled album in 2006, she has continued to excite with her diverse music. She won a Grammy award for Album Of The Year in 2008, and another for Best R&B Performance in 2012. Black Rainbows will be her fourth studio album, set for release September 15th.
