“A Real Thing” by The Beths is Dan’s DJ Pick of the Week! The Beths is an indie pop/rock group from Auckland, New Zealand. The band formed through connections made by the members while studying at the University of Auckland. Since debuting in 2015, the band has released two studio albums and over a dozen singles. Their style falls within the umbrella of indie music, drawing mostly from the pop and rock sides of the genre.

The instrumentation behind “A Real Thing” is heavy and visceral, from the rock-derived guitar grooves to the electronic effects. This is most evident in the drums, which rely heavily on the cymbals to create an aggressive sound. Meanwhile, the bass lays a funky groove underneath, which is fitting for the tune regardless of genre. The guitar is fast-paced and intense, particularly in the chorus and solo sections. Conversely, the vocals lean more towards the pop side of indie music, with a smooth and consistent delivery. The band tends to take advantage of every member vocally, layering satisfying harmonies throughout the song.

“A Real Thing” is the first new music from The Beths since their 2020 album Jump Rope Gazers. The song released alongside an official music video directed by Sports Team. The band is currently on the final stretch of their tour in the United States, and will then transition to an international touring schedule.
