Dan’s DJ Pick of The Week is “Adoringly Drunk” by The Criticals!
Alt-rock outfit The Criticals have made themselves known de facto leaders of a leather-clad, raucous alternative scene here in Nashville. Their electric live show is a must-see, and has propelled the group towards new heights. One of these heights is an upcoming Austin City Limits debut, taking place this weekend. The band will appear alongside rock innovators like Something Corporate and Geese, cementing their status as a group to watch. Spearheaded by vocalist Parker Forbes and guitarist Cole Shugart, the group has made sure to honor and revere their upbringing, taking the time even still to show out for local house shows and festivals. However, the band made an enormous leap, departing to record their debut record in England. The first offering from said record is “Adoringly Drunk.”
The personable DIY attitude that worked The Criticals into the hearts of their fanbase is present in the promotion tactics of the single, giving fans the opportunity to text the band for sneak peeks. Perhaps it was attempt to call to mind their earlier days, juxtaposing their lowly origins with the professional studio shine of “Adoringly Drunk.” In any case, they have a clear love and desire to connect with their fans. A classic case of, ‘you love to see it,’ the track is a true powerhouse of songwriting, production, and performance. One might not be able to see the Nashville through the crisp sonic aura if it weren’t for Forbes’ direct references to a Tennessee youth. Musically, Shugart loads this one to the brim with danceable riffs and crushing progressions. The song is undeniably ‘Criticals’ while offering a respectful nod to the indie garage greats who paved their way.
If “Adoringly Drunk” is any indication of what the forthcoming record will offer, The Criticals are on to something major. Fresh off the ACL performance, the band will bring their nationwide tour to Exit/In on 10/16. Soon after, the band will take a break from headlining to support Houndmouth for a few shows in major cities. While there is no official word on how soon we can expect the looming record, “Adoringly Drunk” seems to have initiated an avalanche of news and announcements from the group.
