Boundary-pushing Indigenous artist Ya Tseen has announced himself in a huge way with Portugal. The Man collab “Knives.” The track, which serves as the opener to the upcoming Indian Yard, is remarkably eclectic. It at once looks forward and backward, recalling MGMT’s peak sonically while experimenting with new, unorthodox sounds. “Knives” is Stephanie’s DJ Pick of the Week!
Ya Tseen refers both to the man at the project’s center, Nicholas Galanin, and the collective of his collaborators. The name, which translates to “be alive,” originates from Galanin’s Tlingit name. That spirit of cultural care is present throughout all of his work, even beyond the Ya Tseen project. Galanin made a huge impact last year with his Land Swipe, a sculpture that tackled the issue of police violence in NYC. And even though his work as Ya Tseen may not be quite that revolutionary or directly political, it still finds its roots in protest. Check out the video for “Knives (feat. Portugal. The Man)” below!
