Rev’s DJ Pick of The Week is “Untangling” by Angie McMahon!
Angie McMahon’s voice and songwriting capabilities have carried her places normally unconceivable for young indie Australian musicians. Getting her start in a soul group, she first caught a glimpse of the stars when she won an opening slot for Bon Jovi. But with a path to stardom seemingly spelled out in front of her, she boldly opted for a different route. McMahon instead chose to start and complete an art degree, taking a 4 year break. Unable to drop music completely, she worked on songs while at university and began rolling out regular releases in 2017. While much of her success came in her homeland, she caught much attention in the states as well. Now that Angie McMahon has established herself as a name to know, where can she go from here?
“Untangling” is McMahon at her most vulnerable. However, her ability to bear all while allowing the listener to find a piece of themself in her words is remarkable. Instrumentally, the song evokes grandiosity and something beyond her small start, but her quiet vocals ground it in something very human. Even in its most intense moments, McMahon’s clement voice lends an intimate nature to “Untangling.” She finds a way to give you the words you couldn’t find yourself, instilling in them a message of capability and ambition.
The track lends itself to an EP, McMahon’s second complete offering of original music in 2 years following 2023’s Light, Dark, Light Again. The EP, Light Sides, is self-described as a “little sister” to the full-length. McMahon recently performed at the Basement East in August. Light Sides is out on all streaming platforms and anywhere you might listen to music.
