Intern Picks of the Week – What’s My Name

This week, us interns thought it would be silly to pick songs with our own name in the title. There needn’t more explanation.

Grace’s Pick: Jeff Buckley “Grace”

To be honest, I didn’t know this song before I searched up “Grace” on Spotify. I know some songs by Jeff Buckley, but not this one. I clicked play and I loved it. This song is featured on the album Grace, released in 1994. This song has an intense emotional pull talking about saying goodbye. This song is the ultimate yearning anthem. Buckley wrote this about saying goodbye to his girlfriend in the airport and pulls in thoughts of morality and the power of love. His songwriting is truly incredible and everyone should give this song a listen if they haven’t already.

Zerita’s Pick: The Marcus King Band “Rita is Gone”

There is not a song with the name “Zerita” in it, so I was left to choose from the shortened version of my name that I have seldom gone by- Rita. Left between The Beatles “Lovely Rita” or The Marcus King Band’s “Rita is Gone”, which are both songs I love, I decided to go with the latter. While we wait in anticipation for the new Marcus King Band album, Darling Blue, let’s revisit the 2016 self-titled- album. “Rita is Gone” is a funky groove with a title that I’m proud to share half-a-name with.

Michelle’s Pick: The Beatles “Michelle”

The Beatles Rubber Soul Album is one of my favorites, but I may be a little biased. This band got me into music at a young age and I would give them credit for me pursuing a job in the music business. “Michelle” has always held a special place in my heart, and has elements of their early works, as well as moving into their more psychedelic rock era. The addition of French in this song brings an added romantic flair that elevates the song’s charm and emotional depth. Chances are you have heard it before, but if it has been awhile, give it another listen. It is worth revisiting.

Leo’s pick: Frank Ocean “Sierra Leone”

While it may not have only my first name in the title, Sierra LEOne is one of the highlight tracks off of Frank Ocean’s masterpiece, titled Channel Orange. Released in 2012, Frank’s debut album has reached cult classic status. With the undeniably compelling songwriting, the psychedelic production, and the passionate vocal performance, Sierra Leone remains as one of Frank Ocean’s best cuts. While there isn’t a single slow or underdeveloped moment across the fifty-six minute run time of Channel Orange, this track is a sweet moment in the album that is sure to satisfy all types of RnB fans.
