Today, Dan’s spinning some unreleased goodies.
Come September 13th, Nada Surf is returning with a brand-new full-length album. For those unfamiliar with the band, you might have heard their ultra-popular single from the 90s, aptly named “Popular.” With spoken word cutting through garage-rock instrumentals, they share much in common with fellow 90’s indie rock legends like Pavement and Built to Spill. Impressively, they’ve managed to continue releasing albums since then and show no signs of slowing down.
Second Skin will be released with the rest of the album on Friday. The song is chock-full of catchy hooks, buzzing riffs, and hyper-specific oddball lyrics that have become a charming staple of the group. Lines like “I didn’t show you I was wearing a porcelain coat” and “Heaven on earth is daytime in a city park” are just a few of the quirky illustrations that present so much originality and comfort to the listening experience. The song alludes to shedding the facade that masks our true selves and opening ourselves up to new experiences. Seeing a band continuously put their best foot forward and pump out great songs almost 30 years after their debut is encouraging.
