Casey’s DJ Pick of The Week is “Too Stoned To Cry” by Margo Price and Billy Strings!

A new collaborative track has dropped from two of alt-country’s most premier innovators. Psych music and country have long been intertwined, in large part thanks to one Willie Nelson and his trailblazing career. In spite of the new world of modern-day country, psych is still finding new ways to intertwine itself in the storied genre. Billy Strings has been incorporating jam music and jazz into his bluegrass roots for some time now. Considering his repertoire, it’s just makes sense that his and self-described “Psychedelic Country Music” queen Margo Price’s paths are crossing at last. Here, “Too Stoned To Cry” is the outstanding result.

Keeping with longtime Nashville tradition of covering great country songs, this one is a rerecording of an Andrew Combs track. “Too Stoned To Cry” can best be described as a drinking song for sober cowpeople (California sober, of course). Forgoing their track records of honky-tonk experimentation, the two opt for a more traditional country sound. Their voices compliment each other excellently, with Strings adding in some incredibly tasteful guitar flourishes. The ballad’s chorus describes “walkin’ the line between hell bent and high,” painting a portrait of a lonesome country stoner floating from saloon to saloon.

Miss Margo Price stays almost inhumanly busy, having performed at Farm Aid, toured with Tedeschi Trucks Band, and recorded tracks with the Heartbreakers’ Mike Campbell, all since the beginning of summer. Price’s return to country additionally includes a slew of guest appearances, notably ones for Orville Peck and Sleater-Kinney. Meanwhile, Strings’ 6th studio LP Highway Prayers releases September 27th. Check out the lyric video for “Too Stoned To Cry” below!
