After five long years, Band of Horses is finally back with new music as they release their latest single “Crutch.” The single comes off the bands sixth album Things Are Great that will be released in January of 2022. “Crutch” gets fans excited for new music, which is why it’s this week’s DJ Pick from Stephanie.
“Crutch” pays homage to the band’s earlier sound. With a folk/indie tune and lyrics that cause you to read between the lines, everything about the song is genius. Ben Bridwell, founder of the band, noted in a press release that “Crutch” came from his own experiences.
“Obviously ‘Crutch’ means some of the things that I was dependent on. My relationship for one. I think I wanted to say, ‘I’ve got a crush on you,’ and I thought it was funny how relationships also feel like crutches. I feel like everybody has had a time when nothing goes right and you still have to carry on. I think that feeling hits you in this song even if you don’t know what the specifics are.”
Things Are Great is based on experiences that the band has had in the recent past. It should be something most listeners can relate to, and “Crutch” is the perfect look into what we can expect. To prepare for the upcoming release, Band of Horses will finish up their remaining tour dates this year, with the album set to release January 21, 2022.
While you wait for more music, you can check out the lyric video for “Crutch.” The video is in the style of an 80s karaoke setup. The entire theme is complete with commercials flipping through during the instrumentals. Check it out below:
