Moon Taxi – “Classics”: Dan’s DJ Pick of the Week

Dan’s DJ pick this week is “Classics” by Moon Taxi! This nostalgic tune was released last week as the first single off their new album, coming Summer 2023.

Nashvillians are sure to recognize the name Moon Taxi, as they have been making waves around Music City since 2006. The band initially formed while they were students at Belmont University; consisting of Trevor Terndrup (lead vocals/guitarist), Spencer Thomson (guitarist), Tommy Putnam (bassist), Wes Bailey (keyboardist), and Tyler Ritter (drummer). Issuing their debut album in 2007, the alternative-rock band quickly began growing a local following through their engaging live performance. One of their earliest victories was at Lightning 100’s first Music City Mayhem festival in the Spring of 2009. After winning Music City Mayhem, Moon Taxi headlined Lightning’s Live On The Green festival in 2010.

In 2013 the band scored a deal with BMG, earning them performances at Bonnaroo, The Governer’s Ball, Lollapalooza, and even The Late Show with David Letterman. It’s safe to say that Moon Taxi is nowhere near finished as they kick off their sixth studio album this summer with new tour dates.

“Classics” is an anthemic yet sentimental ode to nostalgia and the simplicity of adolescence. Lead vocalist Trevor Terndrup discusses how the track “taps into the alchemy of listening to music as a teenager. It’s such a crazy time of self-discovery and identity formation”. Guitarist Spencer Thomson adds, “This is our ode to the songs that comfort us and usher in waves of nostalgia. The music and lyrics recall scenes of 90’s youth bliss, driving around aimlessly listening to burned CDs”. Sonically, the song evokes the innocent, carefree attitude of driving around the neighborhood we grew up in, reminiscing simpler times. Terndrup’s vocals drive this message home with the hook, “So raise your glasses to the classics, no, don’t ever let them die”.
