This week’s local artist spotlight is on Nashville’s own, Soccer Mommy, with her new single “Rings of Saturn.”
Sophia Allison, better known as Soccer Mommy, has been a staple figure in the indie-pop scene for the past ten years. Coming up in her career with fellow pop-rock contemporaries such as Snail Mail, Sasami, Momma, and others, Allison has remained unique by constantly reinventing her sound. Evolving from early stage demos on bandcamp, to bedroom pop, to now indie-pop, Allison is constantly reinventing her sound.
“Rings of Saturn”, Allison’s first release in two years, speaks to feeling lost and looking for something to give her hope. In my conversation with Allison, she referenced her desire to turn to nature, when she needs grounding.
“Nature makes you feel small, in a good way. It makes all the things that can seem so big and worrisome in your life really just very small in comparison to the world.” Allison said.
In this track, she sings of feeling alone and lost, turning to the stars for guidance in her life.
“The stars hardly shine, in the city lights,” Allison writes, drawing on feeling consumed in the hustle and bustle of a big town, falling into a fast paced life.
“But I point my finger to a halo in the sky, I see your light, rings of Saturn, do you hear me when I cry?” she asks the sky, searching for something to draw her home.
Earlier this year, Allison put out a 10th anniversary edition rerelease of her first album “For Young Hearts,” originally released in 2016. For this, she dug up old files from the computer she used to make that album, and pulled songs that weren’t originally included on the record. This addition not only gave the songs new life, but gave long-time fans new songs from a familiar era, offering nostalgia to the beginning of her career.
Currently, Allison is on a co-headline tour with Snail Mail, a decision that came easily for the two as they have been friends for over ten years. Opening for them on this tour is fellow Nashville based musician Brennan Wedl. Allison was first turned onto Wedl when she saw her open for Momma, on their tour. Formally meeting after the show, the two instantly formed a connection, making the decision to have Wedl open for her and Snail Mail on tour a no-brainer.
Catch Soccer Mommy and Snail Mail on their co-headline tour now through October 24.
