Two Dollar Pistol

This week’s Lightning 100 pick for Local Artist of the Week is the artist Brennan Wedl, with her song “Two Dollar Pistol”!

Brennan Wedl grew up in Minnesota, and has been writing and singing from an early age. Early on, she first played violin, before landing on the guitar. She attended Berklee College of Music, where she joined Dazey and the Scouts, who released a sole album, Maggot, in 2017. Though they disbanded soon after, they attracted mass popularity on TikTok in 2020 when a few songs of theirs went viral. Afterwards, Wendl released her solo debut EP, Jersey Devil in 2017, and her first album, Holy Water Branch, in 2019.

Musically, Wedl has described her work as “grunge-try,” exploring a variety of genres such as country, grunge, Americana, and punk. Her 2024 single, “Two Dollar Pistol,” sounds country, yet at the same time manages to feel like a soft 90s alternative rock song. Wedl sings, “step in the light of desire, starving for nothing won’t make you feel full,” pleading with a friend to stop hiding from their dreams, and step out of the “cage” and pursue their dreams in life.
