Rev’s DJ pick of the week is “Bells and Whistles” by Bright Eyes.

Who here has screamed “I lOVE CHEAP THRILLS” on the dance floor? Conor Oberst certainly (maybe?) has, and Bright Eyes’ latest single is here to warn us of the hidden costs.

Bright Eyes is a rock group out of Omaha, Nebraska. The group consists of singer-songwriter and guitarist Conor Oberst, multi-instrumentalist and producer Mike Mogis, and arranger, composer, trumpet, and piano player Nate Walcott. Since beginning in Oberst’s parents house in 1995, the group has released 15 albums. The latest installment is Five Dice, All Threes, set to release on September 20th of this year. The group describes the work as “a record of uncommon intensity and tenderness, communal exorcism and personal excavation.”

Bright Eyes hope to forecast the upcoming album’s energetic and hook-heavy sound with “Bells and Whistles.” The song’s lyrics echo the greater message of the album; that perfection may not be in someone’s best interest, and that growth is always intwined with darkness and hardship that everyone must face. A perfect throw of threes on all five dice just doesn’t make the game fun after all.

Enjoy this deep, yet uplifting summertime tune fit with jaunty piano, electric guitar solos, bright brass, and of course whistling that will be stuck in your head all day.
