Dan’s DJ Pick of the Week is “Love You Less” by Self!

Self has a long history. The band started back in the 1990s with founders Mike and Matt Mahaffey by recording songs in their childhood home. The wonder sibling duo then went on to release their first album Subliminal Plastic Motives in 1995 under Spongebath Records, which they helped found. Their sound fits into the genre of alternative pop. Fans describe their music as full of surprising and unconventional chord progressions, full adventurous harmonies, and thought-provoking lyricism. One of their most notable features is their creativity and unorthodox stylistic choices in their music.

“Love You Less” however is a little more conventional for a Self track. The song is catchy and upbeat. The band’s drummer, Jason Rawlings, laid down a fun alt pop beat throughout the whole song. While Mike is no longer a part of the band, Matt still fronts the group. His vocals are spunky, bouncy, and loose. His newer style is similar to other alternative artists such as Matty Healy of The 1975. “Love You Less” is about wishing you didn’t love someone who’s wrong for you as much as you do. A situation that people more often than not can relate to. “Trying to do my best to keep myself from loving you to death”.
