“Never Gonna Give Me Up” by Sir Woman is our ONErpm Hitmaker of the week!
Sir Woman is the funk soul project of Kelsey Wilson. Based in Austin, TX, their empowering retro groove sound has taken the city by storm. In 2023, they won Austin Music Awards’ Band Of the Year and in 2020 they won Best New Act.
Recently, Sir Woman revealed that they will release two albums titled If it All Works Out and If it Doesn’t. The albums are opposite reflections of each other. “These albums are essentially made for a good day and a bad day…”, Wilson shared on Instagram. On July 12th, they debuted a single from each album: “Never Gonna Give Me Up” and “Who You Gonna Love.”
“Never Gonna Give Me Up” is from their upcoming album, If It Doesn’t. This tune is introspective and funky. Wilson’s rich vocals pull you in and the rhythmic soul vibe keeps you hooked. Despite the upbeat rhythm, the lyrics of this song are vulnerable and woeful. “Sometimes you take what people give you because they show you just enough for you to not give up on them.. this is a wake up call for those in that situation.” says Kelsey Wilson on the song. The cheery vibe of the music cleverly juxtaposes Wilson’s moody lyrics, making this piece dynamic and interesting.
Sir Woman is hitting the road July and August, playing Newport Folk Festival and Rocky Mountain Folks Festival among solo shows. They’re also supporting Sammy Rae & The Friends for multiple dates in October. Then, in early 2025, they’re departing on a full U.S. headline tour.
