Dan’s DJ pick of the week this week is “Basic Being Basic” by Djo!
Djo is the musical project of the Stranger Things star, Joe Keery. Djo began in 2019 when Keery released his first album, Twenty Twenty. Then in 2022, Djo released his sophomore album DECIDE which received major attention, especially with the viral hit “End of Beginning.” The lead single from Djo’s upcoming third album The Crux is “Basic Being Basic.” The Crux will be released on April 4th, and on that same day, Djo is beginning his Back On You World Tour with Post Animal.
In “Basic Being Basic,” Djo uses lyrics like “‘Cause you’re basic / Just looking hot and keeping monotone and understated nothingness / Won’t change it” to poke fun at those who have such superficial and materialistic lives. He then goes on to discuss how he longs for more meaningful and deep connections with lyrics such as “I want simple pleasures, friends who have my back.” Djo manages to be critical of the current social climate while still being vulnerable and revealing his struggles and wants.
“Basic Being Basic” is a track driven by synths and drum tracks. In the verses, Djo has a filter on his vocals that brings an almost robotic element to his voice. One of my personal favorite parts is the little synth parts in the chorus that foreshadow the melody he sings later in the chorus. “Basic Being Basic” balances catchy music elements with thought-provoking lyrical content!
