“Blame” by Girl Tones is Jayson’s DJ pick of the week!
Girl Tones is a two-piece rock duo hailing from right here in Music City. The band consists of two sisters, Kenzie and Laila. Both sisters got their start as classically trained musicians. Kenzie then switched from cello to guitar, while Laila transitioned from piano to drums, bringing their electric rock sound to life. The group released multiple singles produced by Cage the Elephant’s lead singer, Brad Schultz. These singles also released under his label, Parallel Vision. “Blame” comes from Girl Tones’ new EP under the same name and marks the group’s first release of an EP.
“Blame” kicks off with a twangy guitar riff accompanied by lilting background vocals that add an ethereal element to the song. This tone is abruptly cut when Kenzie bursts onto the track with a strong vocal depicting heartbreak under a twinkling moon. Lyrics like “Soft wind blew over my face / As my tears dried I slipped away” paint a clear picture of a soft escape that follows leaving a lover. Girl Tones wrestles with this complex relationship throughout this track. Going between placing the blame for the hurt caused on her lover, or embracing the hard truth that she may be partially at fault.
