Casey’s DJ pick of the week is “Stardust Baby” by Ricki!
Nashville’s own Ricki returns with a fresh new single, full of garage pop daydream. Ricki hails from the midwest but moved to East Nashville in the summer of 2018. It was there, in a tiny apartment room, that she produced and engineered her debut album. Since then, Ricki has been preparing to release her work in the coming year.
This track takes a more laid-back approach compared to Ricki’s past singles. Yet “Stardust Baby” still delivers all the grit, catchiness, and heart that define Ricki’s artistry–qualities that can be heard and felt in everything she creates. The track begins with a repetitive clap along with a 4-on-the-floor kick that grounds the music. The guitars seep into the rhythm section, soaked in chorus, creating a further state of nostalgia. Ricki’s vocals glide over the track with a warm, Tascam tape-saturated melody setting a dreamy tone. Midway through the song, her psychedelic side shines through, as swirling phasey effects weave into the mix. If that wasn’t enough, Ricki takes a left turn and introduces a harmonica solo, shimmering and flying over the other instruments. As the song comes to a close, Ricki reminds us of the excitement and questions that come with newfound love.
