This week’s Lightning 100 Artist of the week pick is Betcha, with their track “You Better Learn to Say Goodbye.”
After a three year hiatus, Nashville’s own Betcha is back to reclaim their spot in the local alt-pop scene.
When the band first formed in 2015, they were mostly a college band. Playing shows at various universities, in the local Nashville scene, and even winning Belmont University’s Rock Showcase in 2016. When they graduated, they weren’t quite ready to leave the band at Belmont, so they cold-emailed Grammy-Winning producer, Jacquire King, an acoustic video showcasing their work, landing them a record deal with Atlantic Records, in 2017.
Between 2017 and 2023, the band released two albums, and went on numerous tours, expanding their fanbase far outside of Nashville. But at the end of 2023 the band felt unsure about what the future of Betcha would look like, so they wiped their social media clean and entered a silent hiatus, temporarily tucking that life to the side.
On August 26, the band took to Instagram, writing about how they spent their time apart, and how a single jam night brought them back together:
“There was no label, no agenda, and no pressure. Just some best buds getting together and letting it rip.”
Their latest track, “You Better Learn to Say Goodbye,” feels like the perfect comeback. Alive with energy, the song immediately pulls listeners in. Backed by heavy drums and bass, “You Better Learn to Say Goodbye” sings to the feeling of knowing when it’s time to go. Whether this track is singing about knowing when to leave a relationship, friendship, or taking a step a away from music, we’re glad they also know when to come back!
