Grace Cummings "Common Man" - Dan's DJ Pick of the Week

Dan’s DJ Pick of the Week is “Common Man” by Grace Cummings!

“Common Man” is the second single off the Melbourne-based singer/songwriter’s upcoming album Ramona, set to release on April 5. Ramona was produced by Jonathan Wilson, acclaimed for his work with Angel Olsen, Father John Misty and Margo Price.

Released singles from Ramona feature Cummings’ powerful, hearty vocals against a bluesy, western-tinged backdrop. The tracks overflow with the distinct, personal songwriting style that makes Cummings’ music so infectious.

Cummings will kick off her North American tour in May, shortly following Ramona‘s release.

“Common Man” expresses Cummings’ desire to live a colorful life, rather than an unfulfilling one. The track’s instrumentation mirrors Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game” while embodying an old-country feel.

Cummings’ lyrics create a tangible Western landscape. The choruses describe her riding on a horse with a pistol on her side. A single listen to “Common Man” is enough to instantly transport you into this scene. Every line act like a portal into the classic Western films featured in the track’s visualizer.

Cummings’ deep vocals, reminiscent of Grace Slick, carry a vitality that urges the track forward. Her vivid songwriting creates an effective escape and encourages listeners to sink into it.
