If we’ve ever had a more mysterious act grace the station as our local artist, Heavy Clap is unapologetically vying for the title. Shrouded in whimsical imagery that channels Carroll-esque surrealism and hazy backroom sleaze, the supergroup’s arrival upon the Nashville rock scene is imminent. One need only scan their cryptic social media to get a sense of what this enigmatic trio is about. With masks, uniforms, and a slick anonymity, the music will do the talking for now. Insiders have described them as “a heavy rock band for the heavy hearted and the weighted mind.” The motley crew of music-makers that compose the group ensures this promise is realized. Accordingly, Heavy Clap brings you “Not Like The Others”.
Rob O’ Block of The Brunswick, Alex Rahal of Them Vibes, and session wizard Sarah Tomek are the faces behind the masks; a trio of minds whose resumés lend themselves to a healthy amount of good old-fashioned loud and rowdy rock and roll. Despite the secrecy, the group was justifiably eager to tout their credentials. The forthcoming debut single “Not Like The Others” channels these backgrounds into a fuzzed-out desert trip of an introduction. The track pushes, pulses, and plows with a driving romp over its curt three minutes. It impressively straddles the line between being hook-driven and riff-centric, featuring endless layers and quirks that blend seamlessly, a testament to the chemistry shared by the three musicians. In any case, there is a palpable magic to the track in its hypnotic, grungy trance.
‘Hare Metal’ is here, and it sounds like Heavy Clap. “Not Like The Others” drops today on all streaming platforms, a dazzling display of heavy rock songwriting and studio execution. Somewhere within the midst of Heavy Clap’s launch lurks a full-length record. However, a magician never reveals their secrets, and the identity being carved out by this trio is clear. While the album isn’t due until 2025, more is most definitely to come from Heavy Clap in the near future. In the meantime, “Not Like The Others” makes them our Frothy Monkey local artist of the week.
