Lightning 100 is excited to announce New Translations Feat. Michigander as our Frothy Monkey Local Artist of the Week with their song “Voided Velvet”!
Nashville’s New Translations are a five-piece band featuring frontman Oliver Pierce, multi-instrumentalists Issac Middleton and Andres Ahogado, bassist/producer Ben Dunn, and drummer Philip Walker. New Translations bring synth-rock alongside retro vibes to their tracks that feel refreshing and communicates the intricacies of existing in the modern age. New Translations is gearing up to release their debut album VACATION on February 14th and will be playing The Blue Room on February 22nd.
“Voided Velvet” uses lyrics like “Hold me close / But not too close” and “Who needs chemistry / When passing time” to communicate the still intense feelings that can come with a frivolous love affair. The track opens with drums very reminiscent of the 80s that drive the song. Ringing guitar helps to bring an atmospheric element to the single. Michigander’s feature furthers the storytelling with the lyrics “Like a moth to a flame / I could waste away with you / In a lover haze” paired alongside passionate vocals that echo out.
The official music video parodies the style of old game shows with the band competing in a price guessing game, dancing with the audience, and a dating show. Michigander’s feature is presented as an animated advertisement from a sponsor that ends in the character getting abducted by aliens. The music video finishes with the band and audience joining together to destroy the set of the game show!
