This week’s Lightning 100 pick for Local Artist of the Week is the band really regular, with their song “[redacted]!”
Really regular is a rock band formed in Nashville in 2023, consisting of members Addi Barrett and Declan Nelligan. The duo released their debut EP, Quit Dreaming, in May of 2024. Since forming, they’ve frequently played at staple Nashville venues such as The East Room and The Eastside Bowl. In the last year, the group started gaining traction in the indie scene, in part due to reaching round 2 in Lightning 100’s independent music competition Music City Mayhem in April.
The duo have described their sound as “skatepark pop.” Their unique style is fuzzy, edgy, and highly melodic, combining influences such as The Killers and Paramore. Their new single, “[redacted],” takes this, and gives it a punchy energy. The meaning of the song, they’ve stated, is about “letting sensitivity be your superpower and never letting the world get you down.” They sing, “pigs are flying, helicopters, dandelions, got you locked up, isn’t it insane? Find someone to blame,” alluding to how society has got us all tangled with frustrations, and how listeners need to stand up against this and make their voices heard.
