This week on Community Corner, Brother Love sits down with Beth Barcus of Porter’s Call. She is the Co-Executive director and porter of Porter’s Call. Located in Franklin, Tennessee. They exist to offer a safe and confidential refuge where full time recording artists can receive guidance, support, and encouragement. They receive professional, tailored care at zero cost. During the conversation, they discuss how artists may feel seen by everyone, but known by no one. Porter’s call offers a safe environment for artists, as well as their spouses, to hold space and acknowledge their challenges, “heart, soul, mind, body.”
Before creating Porter’s Call, Beth Barcus was working on her Master’s 16 years ago and realized she didn’t want to do traditional psychiatric work. Instead, she wanted to do something a little more human, something that felt more like a friend.
The founders created Porter’s Call in 2001, naming it after the traditional role of a “porter.” This is someone whose sole responsibility is to welcome travelers and provide hospitality. This idea is central to their mission. Porter’s Call continues to create a safe and confidential space where artists can share their personal struggles. As well as sharing personal life experiences and receiving support without financial barriers or judgment.
Today, Porter’s Call offers groups, referrals to trauma therapists, workshops, intensives, and also just grabbing a coffee. To ensure people feel valued, Beth Barcus wants to provide a safe space. The pressures of the music industry, such as long days on the road, scrutiny, and the vulnerability of putting personal experiences into their art, can produce mental challenges. Porter’s Call helps by building trust with artists and helping them to healthily reframe their lived experiences.
Porter’s Call helps recording and touring artists at every stage of their career. It doesn’t matter if they are independent musicians or signed to a major label. The services they offer are not only for the artists, but also for their spouses. Porter’s call offers unlimited access to these resources for as long as needed.
