Jayson’s DJ Pick of the Week is the newest track from Autumn Nicholas, “Baggage!”
Autumn Nicholas is a powerful voice in the folk and country scene. They’ve been able to create a discography that is laced with honest and true stories of identity and belonging. Inspired by the BlackLivesMatter and LGBTQ+ marches, Nicholas uses their music to motivate people to act. “Baggage” is no exception.
Released on April 5, “Baggage” is a three minute track about finally moving past the end of a relationship. Despite being about a deeply personal topic, the lyrics are so emotionally universal. Perhaps the first verse describes it perfectly, “You and me in the attic // in a box but I just couldn’t trash it.”
The Nashville-based singer-songwriter has perfected storytelling songwriting with beautiful melodies. The track ends optimistically- “I’m finally holdin’ on to what really matters with a little less baggage.” It’s a moving sentiment as the song comes to a close. Their discography is laced with themes of love, pain, loss, and hope. “Baggage” is another track that fits this almost effortlessly.
