Casey’s DJ pick of the week is “Sweet Thing” by Gyasi.
Who says good, old-fashioned rock ’n’ roll can’t make a comeback in this day and age? It’s no secret that a large part of the population yearns for the memories that come with that era of Glam-rock, whether it be Bowie, Marc Bolann, or any number of other artists from that scene. West Virginia-born Gyasi appears to be a saving grace for this nostalgia. And with energetic performances, eccentric outfits, and electric riffs, he obviously knows exactly what he is doing.
Gyasi’s latest single, “Sweet Thing”, comes fresh off his 11-track album drop in May of this year. It’s rare for an artist to begin their next phase so soon after one ends, but Gyasi is showing his audience that music and entertainment are his full-time focus, and he will surely be soon rewarded for it. “Sweet Thing” features subtle synths, distorted guitars, and an androgynous vocal delivery in the most cohesive way. He preaches self-efficacy and most of all, how good it feels to be who you truly are.
