“What, Me Worry?” by Portugal. The Man is Dan’s DJ Pick of the Week! Portugal. The Man began in 2004 as a side project for former Anatomy of a Ghost members John Gourley and Zachary Carothers. Throughout the years, the two have teamed up with other instrumentalists to fill out the band’s roster as members join and leave. Portugal. The Man has released eight studio albums, two live albums, five EPs, and numerous singles. The band specializes in crafting indie and experimental rock pieces that are pleasant to listen to.
The production behind “What, Me Worry?” layers on sets of instruments as the song continues. The process begins with a rhythm guitar groove, as well as a spoken-word introduction. This is closely followed by the first verse, where the drums, bass, and vocals enter. The pre-chorus features the rhythm guitar, playing in a higher register than before. Finally, a multi-piece horn ensemble enters during the chorus sections, completing the layering process. Similarly, the vocal harmonies are variably added and removed depending on the section. The vocal delivery is smooth, yet purposeful and rhythmic.
“What, Me Worry?” is Portugal. The Man’s first musical release in 2022. It is unknown whether the song is a standalone release, or intended to preview an upcoming album.
