Soccer Mommy

“Shotgun” by Soccer Mommy is Casey’s DJ Pick of the Week! Soccer Mommy is the stage name of Sophia Regina Allison, a singer-songwriter born and raised in Nashville, Tennessee. She first picked up a guitar at six years old, continuing to learn on the instrument through her high school years. Sophia’s first use of the name Soccer Mommy was in the summer of 2015, when she uploaded her self-recordings to Bandcamp. While attending NYU, she landed a record deal with label Fat Possum, leading her to drop out of college and return to Nashville as a performer. Her discography includes three studio albums, four EPs, and over a dozen singles.

At its core, “Shotgun” is about Sophia’s carefree nature, particularly her eagerness to be there for others. The instrumentation features various electronic synths and drums layered together. Combining these with her free-flow guitar playing creates a floating sense of controlled chaos throughout the song. This is enhanced by the heavy effects applied to the instruments, particularly the drums and guitar. On the other hand, Sophia’s vocals are airy and soft, with just a touch of processing and effects.

Soccer Mommy released “Shotgun” alongside the announcement of her upcoming album, Sometimes, Forever. The album drops June 24th, with options to pre-order and pre-save here. In addition, Soccer Mommy is currently on tour in North America, and will tour internationally this summer. Tickets for her shows, including a nearby show in Memphis, are available here.
