St. Vincent – Pay Your Way In Pain: DJ Pick of the Week

If you thought you knew St. Vincent’s deal, think again. The guitar god is back to follow up 2017’s sharp postmodern MASSEDUCTION with a project that is equally sexy, equally high concept, yet the aesthetic inverse of her earlier work. Daddy’s Home is out May 14th on Loma Vista, and it’s all sleazy New York City nostalgia. Co-produced by Annie Clark and Jack Antonoff, the album’s lead single “Pay Your Way In Pain” is Stephanie’s DJ Pick of the Week.

One thing about St. Vincent: she loves a production. MASSEDUCTION felt as much about the actual music as it did about the deadpan promo put out ahead of it, and so far Daddy’s Home appears to be no different. News of the record first surfaced on street posters, which were then followed up with a vague video clip and the phone number 1-833-77-DADDY. Fans who called in heard the message “She’s back, in a new role like you’ve never seen her before. Featuring the new single ‘Pay Your Way In Pain.” Nobody expected it, nobody believed it, and nobody could stop it.”

In the track’s Bill Benz-directed music video she’s a new character indeed— blonde bobbed wig, baggy suit, and understated dance moves. The name of the record was inspired by her father’s release from prison nine years after he was incarcerated for white-collar financial crimes, but it’s clear here that “daddy” is also a reference to herself. She plays the part convincingly.
