Steph’s DJ pick of the week is “Slack” by COIN!
COIN fans rejoyce, a new album is upon us. The Nashville based, Belmont alums have long been a staple in the Nashville indie pop scene and look as though they’ll continue with a strong new album release titled “I’m Not Afraid of Music Anymore”. “Slack” was the second single release preceding the album and sticks out as a feel-good indie pop banger. Vocals lean in and out of falsetto in classic COIN fashion, while the production stays tight and clean. It’s apparent that these guys have an improved amount of artistic accuracy that comes from having a band member guiding the production process.
The track is subtly sprinkled with fun references to past songs in their nearly 10-year-old catalog. The lines, “You know I don’t talk to much” and “I don’t crash my car” seem like pretty clear callbacks to their smash hits “Talk Too Much” and “Crash My Car”, respectively. However, this time around, lead singer Chase Lawrence is realizing he isn’t that same person that he used to be. He doesn’t talk to much, and he doesn’t crash his car. But when his outgrown, toxic love interest calls him back, he’ll go right back to the person he used to be. It’ll be different this time, right?
COIN will be kicking off their “I’m Not Afraid of Tour Anymore” tour in Franklin on the 29th for Pilgrimage Music Festival, so grab those tickets!
