Dan’s DJ pick of the week is Nicki Bluhm’s “The Beat Goes On.” Bluhm, while originally from San Francisco, is currently pursuing music in Nashville, using the local Tennessee talent on her most recent project “The Beat Goes On: Nicki Bluhm Sings Cher.”
“The Beat Goes On ” was originally recorded in 2020 while working on her 2022 album Avondale. Bluhm, along with her producer Jesse Noah Wilson, ventured into Cher’s catalog to find songs that spoke to Bluhm’s vision for the cover album. This cover provides a heavier, rockier take on the track, while still maintaining the groove and vintage feel of the original Sonny & Cher classic. Bluhm’s vocals are accompanied by those of her current bassist Steve Adams singing as Sonny on the track, offering the same satisfying, smooth and steady repetition of “the beat goes on” to accompany Bluhm’s confident and expressive Cheresque inflections. The heavier and fuller instrumentation- primarily gritty guitar, organ, and drums- yields an incredible cohesion to the rugged theme. The song is an inspired ode to the original, maintaining its unique sound and vocalizations, while delivering a welcome modern version of the production and style.
