Colin Wylie was an original member of the 90s rock band Blinker the Star. Since then, he was a member of the band Hinterlandband, a folk-pop band. In 2019, Wylie released his self-titled debut album that spanned more genres than you can count in its 10 songs, highlighting Wylie’s diverse musical capabilities. In 2020, Wylie released two singles, the most recent of which is a cover of a song by New Zealand rock band Split Enz. “Six Months in a Leaky Boat” is Casey’s DJ Pick of the Week!
Colin Wylie’s cover maintains the dreamy and excited energy of the original. Colin Wylie ups the tempo just a tad and brings a bit more of a rock feel. He sings an octave lower than the lead singer of Split Enz, Neil Finn. The original song was released in 1982 and contained distinct 80s musical elements. For example, a recognizable arpeggiated synth runs throughout the song. Wylie manages to make that synth feel modern and retro at the same time in the recently released cover. Through this cover, Wylie revives the original track’s spirit of adventure and releases it right when we need that sense of exploration and freedom most!
