Rev’s DJ Pick of the Week!
Today’s pick comes from Death Cab for Cutie frontman, Benjamin Gibbard. Gibbard has been busy these past few months in quarantine, live streaming his own songs along with Death Cab hits, Depeche Mode, The Decemberists, and Radiohead. While streaming, he has also raised money for many charities during these unusual times. He also released a song titled “Life in Quarantine” that documents the daily struggles of the monotony of everyday life as of late.
“Proxima B” was the final send-off to his lifestream concert series.
Gibbard says this about the meaning behind the song, “This one I wrote a while ago, and I was going to have it out as a single for my solo tour this spring. It’s about a planet that was discovered deep, deep in the cosmos, called Proxima B. The three things you need to know about Proxima B to understand the song are: One, there’s a planet called Proxima B that they think has water on it. It’s somewhat Earth-like. Secondly, it orbits the star called Centauri. And three, there’s been a lot of talk of ‘Ooh, maybe we can get there at some point.’ So I wrote this song in response to that.”
Inspired by the recent space race, “Proxima B” is an upbeat 90’s inspired single that mixes Gibbard’s smooth vocals and relaxed guitar tone to create a stunning single. This release may be new, but it is full of nostalgia from the late 90’s early 2000’s indie scene. Check out this single, it’s the perfect pairing for a hot summer getaway, even if that means moving from the couch to the backyard.
