Joy Oladokun never fails to wow listeners with her soulful and powerful vocals. Her newest release “Bigger Man,” off of her 2021 album in defense of my own happiness, is Dan’s DJ Pick of the Week! Featuring Maren Morris, the track makes a strong statement about how life can favor some and not others. Joy Oladokun sings with passion and pain in “Bigger Man,” leaving a lasting impression on what it means to work hard for what you have.
Originally from Arizona, Oladokun learned how to play guitar after watching a performance by Tracy Chapman. She quickly began writing and playing guitar. As a singer-songwriter and producer, Oladokun has accumulated much acclaim for her work. She was voted as the number one LGBTQ+ Musician to Listen To by Vogue. Additionally, she performed on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. We are excited to see what Oladokun does in Nashville!
Oladokun’s newest record is an intentional and emotional telling of her past experiences. She states, “To me, music is a vehicle of catharsis. I write a lot of sad songs, but I always push for a sliver of a silver lining or glimmer of hope it could be better. That’s why I’m writing in the first place. I want you to be changed when you hear me, and not because I’m special, but because I make music with the intention to change myself.” As Oladokun said, we can definitely feel a change after hearing “Bigger Man.”
