Stephanie’s back at it again with another stellar DJ pick of the week with Spill Tab’s “Splinter”! This new track is the latest from Korean French American, LA based singer/songwriter Claire Chicha, better known by her stage name Spill Tab.
Since starting out in 2019, Spill Tab has garnered over half a million monthly listeners on Spotify. She would later on grab the public’s attention with her 2020 debut EP, Oatmilk. Splinter serves as a follow up to another 2022 single Sunburn and her 2021 EP Bonnie, both of which you can check out here, along with all of Spill Tab’s other releases.
Described as a mix of alternative/bedroom pop, Spill Tab’s sound is very distinct and Splinter clearly embodies that. The track itself thrives with its misdirection, distracting the listener with beautiful harmonies and upbeat instrumentation, but upon a second listen, the darker lyrics become more apparent, revealing a perfect combination of contrasting elements. Discussing her vision of the track, she explains,
“I wanted to make something with a bit of an early 2000s rom-com end credits vibe going on. So, I made ‘Splinter ‘with my friends Wyatt and Austin, who absolutely smashed it. It’s a bit depressing lyrically but I love having those visuals layered over the crunchy drums and guitars.”
