Casey’s DJ pick of the week is “Dinosaurs” by Judy Blank!
Judy Blank is an indie folk sensation from Utrecht, The Netherlands. Blank blends elements of 60s girl groups and indie rock to form her eclectic sound. Last January, she moved to Nashville to work on her upcoming sophomore album. Her magnetic stage presence has led her to become the first Dutch artist to perform at AmericanaFest, so make sure to catch her at DRKMTTR on March 5th!
“Dinosaurs” finds the balance between being lighthearted and thought-provoking. The song uses lyrics like “me, myself, and all my friends patiently waiting for the world to end / it will not affect us / they’re never gonna get / me and my dinosaurs” to convey a sense of needing to make a change before we end up like the dinosaurs. Blank uses a method that finds the line between sarcasm and playfulness in her lyricism, compelling listeners to stop and reflect upon its deeper meaning. The instrumentation uses electronic elements to create a dreamy soundtrack to the end of the world!
The video puts viewers in a Technicolor blend of 50s nostalgia, reminiscent of the dissonance between frivolous materialism and a sense of impending doom of the time. Throughout the video, Blank is surrounded by little toy dinosaurs, referencing back to their extinction becoming a possibility in our future.
