This week’s Lightning 100 pick for Local Artist of the Week is the artist MORGXN, with his song, “Every Beginning (feat. Langhorne Slim)”!
Morgan Isaac Karr, who’s artist name is MORGXN, grew up in Nashville. At age 9, he landed a part in the musical, Oliver! Though it was a small part, it made him realize he wanted to keep performing. He attended Northeastern University, before going to New York, where he understudied a lot of the roles in the Broadway musical Spring Awakening. Eventually, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue music, releasing his debut single in 2016, “Love You with the Lights On”, and then his first studio album Vital in 2018. The lead single of that album, “home,” made a few charts, and Billie Eilish named it as one of the songs that inspired her song “Bad Guy.”
As an artist, MORGXN musically combines a variety of genres, such as indie, pop, and electronic music. Lyrically, he is diverse, exploring many themes, ranging from resilience to introspectiveness. For years, he has been a major LGBTQ+ advocate across Tennessee, which is also a notable theme in his lyrics. He has said how beautiful it is that he is helping create a queer community in Nashville. In fact, the Tennessee Pride Chamber awarded him the 2024 Voice of Change Award for his advocacy.
The new single, “Every Beginning,” is a relaxing, largely folk sounding song. It also incorporates small hints of both country and indie as well. While slow, MORGXN’s vocals in the song are powerful, and his harmonies with feature Langhorne Slim are incredible. Lyrically, the song is both about new beginnings and accepting what life has to offer. He sings, “for every beginning, there must be an end,” and “life will break your heart, you know it will, so let’s fall in love with the adventure of being still”, lines which highlight these messages.
