This week’s DJ pick by Rev is by Peter Gabriel and his song Road to Joy. This funky song is from Peter Gabriel’s upcoming Album I/O.
Peter Gabriel is a legendary artist from the UK who has been writing music for almost fifty years. His musical debut came with the founding of progressive rock band Genesis in 1967. After leaving Genesis in 1975, Gabriel launched his solo career with his hit single “Salisbury Hill.” In the 1980’s Peter Gabriel would release a number of hits including “Sledgehammer” and “Big Time.”
Along with his successful music career, Peter Gabriel is a prolific human rights activist and recipient of the Man of Peace award. His 1980 song “Biko” was written after the death of anti-apartheid activist Steve Biko. The song itself is a criticism of the mistreatment of black South Africans. His activism involved him in a number of social justice benefit shows including his 1988 Amnesty International’s Human Rights Now! tour.
“Road to Joy” is a funky tune that keeps the signature sound of Peter Gabriel. According to him, the song deals with the human brain and how it perceives reality. It refers to near-death experiences and locked-in syndrome which makes it impossible for people to communicate.
