“Frankenstein” by Venus & the Flytraps is Casey’s DJ Pick of the Week!
Venus & the Flytraps are one of Nashville’s best-kept not-so-secret secrets. Consisting of duo Ceci Tomé and Brenna Kassis, the pair is bringing a fresh face to the indie pop-rock of Music City.
Their first EP, released in 2022, titled “Boys Are Cuter When They’re Crying” caught the eyes/ears of locals. Quickly, they became one of the most sought-after up-and-coming bands in town. They have toured with other indie frontrunners such as Samia and Metric. Since then, they have been building a following not just in Nashville, but also in places such as Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles.
Featuring distorted guitars, rooted drums, and vengeance the group is part of a new generation of women in rock, sparing no cost at creating some of the most dynamic indie anthems. Themes of facing obsession, perceived perception, and self-discovery are present throughout several of their albums.
“Frankenstein” was first brainstormed in 2020 during the group’s freshman year at Belmont University. Recently resurrected and reworked, the track is what you scream into your pillow after an argument. Venus & the Flytraps confront emotions of helplessness and female rage head-on. Lyrics include, “Frankenstein’s the man and not the monster/ If you try hard enough / I’m sure that you’ll come up / With things I won’t know ”
