If you haven’t heard the name Jason Isbell before, you clearly haven’t taken a dive into the alt-country, singer-songwriter world. Originally a member of the southern rock outfit “Drive-By Truckers”, Isbell has continued as a solo artist since 2007 and also releases more band-oriented arrangements with his supporting band “the 400 Unit”.

Now, Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit is coming in hot with a blast from the past cover of the Tom Petty song “You’re Gonna Get It.” The cover is done masterfully by Isbell, toeing the line between staying true to the nature of the tune while making it his own. With the orignal song already leaning into the southern rock vein, it seems only right that Jason Isbell should do it justice. The song can be found on the soundtrack of the new AppleTV+ show “Bad Monkey” along with other artists like Eddie Vedder, flipturn, and Fitz and the Tantrums also covering Tom Petty hits.

The song riffs around in distorted guitars, playing clear homage to the decade of the original recording. Isbell’s vocals come strong and growly as he repeatedly chants the main hook, “You’re gonna get it babe, You’re gonna get it babe.” It’s a comforting callback to the late Tom Petty, whose profound effect on rock and songwriting has influenced millions of artists, including Jason Isbell. I imagine this was a full circle moment for the already acclaimed artist who now gets to thank his predecessors.
